Things to Think About When Ordering Cabinetry: A Guide to Getting It Right

Ordering cabinetry is one of the most excitingโ€”and importantโ€”parts of a kitchen or bath renovation. Cabinets define the style, maximize functionality, and represent a significant portion of your remodeling investment. At Wildwood Kitchens and Baths, we help our clients make smart, informed choices that result in stunning and functional spaces.

Here are key things to consider before placing your cabinetry order:

1. Know Your Layout

Your cabinetry layout sets the foundation for everything. Are you sticking to the existing footprint or redesigning the flow entirely? Think about how you use the space and whatโ€™s not currently working. Is there a wall or closet that can be removed to reconfigure the space to make it more functional? Or moving appliances or fixtures around for better flow? How about adding or removing a window or doorway to create better function? At Wildwood, we can help you visualize any changes you are considering by creating 3D renderings. Whether you are changing the layout or not, we take precise measurements and create detailed CAD drawings to ensure the layout works for your needs and your homeโ€™s dimensions.

2. Define Your Style

Cabinets are a major design element, so their style, finish, and color will influence the entire room. Things to consider when choosing a cabinet door are door type (ie. shaker, raised panel, slab, etc.), door finish (ie. painted, stained, or laminated), wood species (ie. mdf, maple, white oak, hickory, alder, etc.), and door style (ie. inset, full overlay, partial overlay). Whether your aesthetic leans modern, farmhouse, traditional, or transitional, your cabinetry should reflect your personality and coordinate with other materials like flooring, countertops, and tile. A Wildwood designer would be happy to show you the different cabinetry options and help guide you in the right direction.

3. Functionality First

Form follows function. Consider every item in your existing kitchen and think about how you would like to store and access those items. Make a plan for storing and accessing each item. Do you need deep drawers for pots and pans? Pull-outs for spices? Charging stations hidden in drawers? Perhaps a countertop cabinet with an outlet to hide a coffee maker, toaster, or mixer to keep those countertops looking clean. The correct cabinetry and interior accessories can make all the difference in how efficient your kitchen or bath is. Stop into the Wildwood showroom to see different accessory options and how they might help you stay more organized in your new kitchen.

4. Budget Wisely

Cabinetry is often the biggest line item in a remodeling budget. But not all cabinets are created equalโ€”consider what you’re getting in terms of materials, construction quality, finish durability, and warranty. Cabinet boxes are typically made out of plywood or particle (furniture) board. Cabinets made out of plywood are typically a higher quality product. Even better is if that plywood does not have any added formaldehyde. Often soft-close hinges and soft-close drawer boxes are a desired upgrade as well. At Wildwood, weโ€™ll help you weigh the pros and cons of stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinetry to match your priorities and budget.

5. Lead Times and Logistics

Depending on the type and manufacturer, cabinet lead times can vary from a few weeks to several months. Your timeline will affect which products are availableโ€”and when construction can begin.

โณ Order early to avoid delays. Your designer will coordinate logistics to keep the project moving smoothly.

6. Double-Check the Details

Before the final order is placed, your designer will review everything with youโ€”layout, cabinet sizes, finishes, door styles, accessories, appliance specs, and jobsite measurements. It is recommended that appliances are selected prior to finalizing cabinetry to ensure the cabinets will fit around the appliances. If selected after cabinets are ordered, you will be stuck within the constraints of the cabinet dimensions. This is your chance to ask questions and catch any discrepancies.

โš ๏ธ Itโ€™s critical to confirm all the details. Once cabinetry is ordered, changes can be costlyโ€”or not possible.

7. Partner With a Pro

Cabinetry isn’t just about choosing a pretty doorโ€”itโ€™s a complex puzzle of function, design, measurements, and construction. Working with a certified designer and a showroom like Wildwood ensures youโ€™re getting expert guidance, top-tier products, and a seamless experience from start to finish.
